Dare to Lead (Book Study)
October 28, 2020
In book study format, participants will discover and discuss in whole group and small team discussions ideas on how to build courage in the workplace. Renowned research professor Brene’ Brown has spent the past two decades studying courage and vulnerability. She has found that both leaders and teams face serious problems in their ability to display vulnerability at work; instead, they sabotage themselves, killing innovation and creativity. In this book she discusses owning your fears, choosing courage over comfort, whole hearts over armor, and building an organizational culture based on bravery.
Lessons in Leading by Vision: The Ride of a Lifetime (Book Study)
December 2, 2020
In The Ride of a Lifetime, Robert Iger shares the lessons he learned while running Disney and leading its 220,000-plus employees, and he explores the principles that he believes are necessary for true leadership, including:
- Optimism. Even in the face of difficulty, an optimistic leader will find the path toward the best possible outcome and focus on that, rather than give in to pessimism and blaming.
- Courage. Leaders have to be willing to take risks and place big bets. Fear of failure destroys creativity.
- Decisiveness. All decisions, no matter how difficult, can be made on a timely basis. Indecisiveness is both wasteful and destructive to morale.
- Fairness. Treat people decently, with empathy, and be accessible to them.
In book study format, participants will discuss thoughts related to Mr. Iger’s leadership principles and experiences over the course of almost 50 years in executive-level leadership.
Leaders Eat Last (Book Study)
March 10, 2021
As a follow-up to his widely acclaimed book, Start with Why, Simon Sinek describes in Leaders Eat Last that in his work with organizations around the world, he noticed that some teams trust each other so deeply that they would literally put their lives on the line for each other. Other teams, no matter what incentives are offered, are doomed to infighting, fragmentation and failure. Why? The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. “Officers eat last,” he said. That is, great leaders sacrifice their own comfort–even their own survival–for the good of those in their care. Sinek reveals that too many workplaces are driven by cynicism, paranoia, and self-interest. But the best ones foster trust and cooperation because their leaders build what he calls a “Circle of Safety” that separates the security inside the team from the challenges outside. In this book study format, participants will engage in small groups discussions of their experiences with and thoughts on with the concepts presented.
