This co-hort is designed for early career assistant principals. Participants may register for all four sessions at a special price or may register for each individual session.

Dates and descriptions for each session are listed below:

Introduction to the Role/Responsibilites of the AP

October 26, 2018

Whether the Assistant Principalship will be your career or the start of your journey to other roles in school leadership, beginning well is essential. Attend this session to examine both yourself and the role of the Assistant Principal.  What are the key leadership skills necessary to my success? What will be new that I have never done before? How do I mesh my abilities with those of my school principal so that a strong leadership team is formed? Plan to engage in activities and discussion with other early career AP's as you learn to use old and newly learned skills for the benefit of the students.

Classroom Management and Parent Communication

January 31, 2019

Schools today are in the spotlight more than ever.  Unfortunately, it is often not what we want to hear about our public schools. Inappropriate student and adult behavior are the headlines more and more. As a school leader, you make on-the-spot decisions every day. How the public perceives these decisions will be determined on how you handle them. If there’s a disconnect between the public and your school, rebuilding trust will be an uphill battle. In this workshop we will discuss how building relationships with students, staff, and parents strongly impacts productivity and effectiveness. Content will provide preparation on how to have a plan and work structure in place where you manage tasks more efficiently, and students, staff, and parents are confident in your ability to lead the school. Through collaborative small group discussions, we will grapple with real-world scenarios related to classroom management and discipline and, ultimately, how to make the clear decisions needed.

Key Transitions: Classroom to School Leadership

February 26, 2019

In this "near end of school year" session, it will be time to reflect on what you have learned and then define a few key transitions so that you and your school principal can significantly impact student achievement. A plan for action is essential. What actions need to be taken? Do they relate to personnel, curriculum, instructional practice, planning vs. implementation, changes in the culture of the school, or other identified targets?  To the leadership team you bring new perspectives and recent classroom experience. During this session, practice using your skills to both identify needs, determine the local resources and context that will enable success, and gain classroom and leadership support for action. And most importantly refine your instructional leadership actions as you assist teachers in improving teaching and learning in your school.

Managing the Work of the AP: A Careful Balance

March 5, 2019

The role of the assistant principalship is very complex. The daily demands of the job can feel challenging, exhausting and, at times, difficult to balance the many priorities of the assistant principal’s daily work. This engaging session will provide participants with strategies for identifying and balancing the three-fold nature of the assistant principalship: 1) instructional leadership, 2) operational management, and 3) organizational development.  You will gain an understanding of how you currently prioritize and use time as an assistant principal as well as knowledge on how to become more effective at utilizing and prioritizing time.  In addition, participants will obtain a clear understanding of balancing and organizing work through the four components of work organization.
