Introduction to the Role/Responsibilities of the AP
October 8, 2020
Whether the assistant principalship is your long-term career focus or the start of your journey to other roles in school leadership, beginning well is essential. Attend this session to examine both yourself and the role of the assistant principal. What are the key leadership skills necessary for success? What will be new that you have never done before? How do you mesh your abilities with those of your school principal so that a strong leadership team is formed? Plan to engage in activities and discussion with other early career APs as you learn to use old and newly learned skills for the benefit of the students.
Managing the Work of the AP: A Careful Balance
December 2, 2020
The role of the assistant principalship is very complex. The daily demands of the job can feel challenging and exhausting as you seek to balance the many priorities of the assistant principal’s work. This engaging session will provide participants with strategies for identifying and balancing the three-fold nature of the assistant principalship: 1) instructional leadership, 2) operational management, and 3) organizational development. You will gain an understanding of how you currently prioritize and use time as an assistant principal as well as knowledge on how to become more effective at utilizing and prioritizing time. In addition, participants will obtain a clear understanding of balancing and organizing work through the four components of work organization.
Classroom Management and Parent Communication
February 3, 2021
Schools today are in the spotlight more than ever. Unfortunately, the news is often not what we want to hear about our public schools. Inappropriate student and adult behavior are in the headlines more and more. As a school leader, you make on-the-spot decisions every day that are critical for maintaining the crucial balance. How the public perceives these decisions will be determined on how you handle them. If there’s a disconnect between the public and your school, rebuilding trust will be an uphill battle. In this workshop we will discuss how building relationships with students, staff, and parents will positively impact productivity and effectiveness. Content will provide preparation on how to have a plan and work structure in place to enable you to manage tasks more efficiently, thereby increasing students’, staff, and parents’ confidence in your ability to lead the school. Through collaborative small group discussions, we will grapple with real-world scenarios related to classroom management and discipline and, ultimately, how to make the clear decisions needed.
Key Transitions: Classroom to School Leadership
March 3, 2021
In this "near end of school year" session, it will be time to reflect on what you have learned and then define a few key transitions so that you and your school principal can take to significantly impact student achievement. A plan for action is essential. What actions need to be taken? Do they relate to personnel, curriculum, instructional practice, planning vs. implementation, changes in the culture of the school, or other identified targets? To the leadership team you bring new perspectives and recent classroom experience. During this session, participants will practice identifying needs, determining the local resources and context to enable success, and gaining classroom and leadership support for action. And, most importantly, you will practice refining your instructional leadership actions as you assist teachers in improving teaching and learning in your school.
