Descriptions for each session are listed below:
Developing Your People
November 12, 2024
Employee development is critical for grooming future leaders. As greater numbers of Gen X principals are retiring, the development of individuals in the assistant principalship role is especially critical. Recent focus group data suggests that recently promoted principals felt inadequately prepared for the role upon entering the job.
One way to create a pipeline is to prime an existing employee for engagement and development through formal reviews and development. Without providing assistant principals with new responsibilities, training for new skills, and ongoing feedback, leaders are leaving potential future principals unprepared. By simply creating a development plan and having a conversation with the employee about her or his career direction, leaders can greatly improve morale and productivity while also developing the next generation of school leaders.
In this workshop, you will learn keys to effectively developing the skills of current APs as well as other staff and faculty, including how to have a conversation about development, how to guide employees to define their own outcomes, various forms of development for job enrichment, and the components of an individual development plan. As a result, you will be better able to guide each employee and support him or her to craft an individualized path that benefits both you and the employee.
Productive Conflict
January 28, 2025
In this session participants will be provided with a learning experience that increases self-awareness of behaviors used during conflict and increases knowledge of how to effectively respond during the uncomfortable and unavoidable challenges of workplace conflict. Rather than focus on a step-by-step process for conflict resolution, content offers personalized techniques to curb destructive behaviors so that conflict can become more productive, ultimately improving workplace relationships and results.
Leading When Overwhelmed and Pressured
February 27, 2025
Principals encounter many stressors during the day—due dates, meetings, disagreements, difficult situations, and a never-ending flow of assignments. As you try to balance all these situations while working 50 hours or more a week, emotional resolve may start to weaken. When this happens, you begin to lose your patience, find your job to be less meaningful, and may even develop health issues. This session is designed to give participants the tools needed to identify workplace stressors, end self-defeating talk, build communicative structures, and deal more calmly with change.
